Application now available

If you are interested in taking J417, Magazine Publishing, in Fall 2012, please fill out the online application. This course enrolls by application because it has a specific set of spaces available by student interest, covering the teams necessary to produce a print and online magazine.

A few important notes:

  • application deadline: noon Friday, March 30 (this bumps up against spring break, so apply early if you are leaving)
  • notification of admission: by 5 p.m. April 9
  • preference given to those graduating in December 2012, May 2013 or August 2013 but students graduating later should apply
  • students without the prereq of 335/345 but graduating by those dates should apply but receive lower preference than those who have the prereq
  • graduate students do not need the prereq of 335/345

Course Information

J417 takes an integrated, in-depth approach to magazine management, writing, editing and design. It covers the magazine industry from both the editorial and business ends, bringing together journalism and strategic communication students. Participants in the course should be prepared to take an open-minded approach, as they are expected to understand all facets of the industry while also applying extra focus and effort in their particular areas of interest.

Goals

Through work in this course, students should develop:

  • knowledge of magazine history, operations and effects
  • finesse in working in small and large groups to produce superior work
  • comfort with intense deadline pressure
  • time management skills and the ability to analyze and complete multiple tasks
  • ability to develop clean, clear and engaging magazine articles, designs and support pieces
  • research skills
  • familiarity with print layout and Web editing software, ranging from minimal to extensive depending upon your interests
  • finely tuned critical thinking skills
